Space Maintainers for Missing Tooth
Preserve and maintain space.
Space maintainers are appliances used in the mouth to preserve and maintain space. They are necessary when one or more primary molars have been prematurely lost due to trauma or disease.
Hold the space of a missing tooth
A space maintainer is an orthodontic appliance that is used to hold the space of a missing tooth. When a tooth is lost, the adjacent teeth can begin to drift into the empty space. This can cause problems with the alignment of the teeth and can make it difficult to place a dental implant or artificial tooth in the space.
Custom-made Space Maintainers
Space maintainers are used to keep the space open until the permanent tooth can erupt. They are custom-made to fit your child’s mouth and are usually made from stainless steel or plastic. Space maintainers are usually removable, but they can also be cemented in place.
These devices are used to hold the space in a child’s mouth after a primary tooth has been lost. They are used to prevent the adjacent teeth from moving into the empty space and to maintain the space for the future permanent tooth. Space maintainers come in two basic types: removable and fixed.
Removable space maintainers are Appliances that the child can take out and clean. They are generally used for baby teeth that have been lost in the front of the mouth. Fixed space maintainers are cemented into place and can only be removed by a dentist. They are usually used for back teeth that have been lost.
These are an important part of dental care for children. If your child has lost a primary tooth, be sure to talk to your dentist about whether a space maintainer is right for them.
